Digital billboards to deliver weather warning information during emergencies

Digital Out Of Home (DOOH) screens will now act as an important part of the New Zealand’s existing emergency communications channels, providing a highly visible channel to reach people quickly – using large-format digital billboards to display weather warnings in real time.

When a specific area is under a red or orange severe weather warning for heavy rain or strong winds, the safety message from Nema will play. A live data feed will then keep the billboards messages up to date as conditions change. Building on the belief that digital billboards can serve a public good as well as a commercial one.

New Zealand digital billboard network Lumo is pioneering the innovation in partnership with:

MetService, New Zealand’s official provider of safety-critical severe weather information

Nema, the government’s National Emergency Management Agency

VML, behaviour change agency

Latch, development partner

Perion, programmatic DOOH tech platform.
