Out of Home Never Looked So Good - April

Each month, we celebrate the bold creatives and clients from Aotearoa and around the world who have embraced and amplified the potential of Out of Home advertising through their attention-grabbing campaigns.

We hope you'll find inspiration in the examples we've handpicked, both locally and internationally, demonstrating how classic and digital Out of Home formats have been ingeniously utilised to deliver truly captivating campaigns. Perhaps one of these will ignite your next brilliant creative idea.

Don't forget to enter the Q2 OOHMAA Awards - The Speccies! If your campaign stood out and ran between April and June 2024, submit your entry here before June 12.

BARGIN BOX

Aotearoa: When the supermarket’s hectic, a big shop is the last thing anyone feels like doing. So, to highlight how Bargain Box’s meal kits offer you a smarter way to do your weekly shop without the crowds, they used Google Maps location data to reveal just how busy supermarkets can get. Tactically positioned near the most popular supermarkets, these real-time billboards are an ongoing reminder of how you could save yourself the stress with Bargain Box. The selected digital billboard locations were situated near or en route to one of the country’s major supermarkets (Pak ‘N Save, Woolworths, New World), which featured a headline that cheekily and cleverly alluded to the name of the nearby supermarket.

ANIMATES - A PAW-CAST FOR PETS

Aotearoa: With pet safety as the utmost priority, Animates leveraged DCO to keep pet owners informed about conditions as they evolve throughout the hot summer days. We all love a sunny stroll with our furry friends – but some days aren't pawfect for walkies. That's why they, in partnership with MetService, Animates Vetcare NZ, and Hearts & Science, have brought pet safety to the pavement with a creative, real-time DOOH solution. Powered by the MetService paw-some module, with pet-friendly insights from Animates Vetcare NZ, the dynamic creative provides accurate, informative, and localised recommendations to keep our furry friends safe no matter the season. There were 2x custom event triggers with important updates for pet owners: foot path temperature and heat stress.

Z ENERGY - TEASEBURGER

Aotearoa: To launch Z Energy’s bold new Cheeseburger Pie, they stirred up some delicious controversy by taking a playful jab at small-town outrage over fast food giants setting up shop. The targets? Picton and Whitianga, two towns with a history of vocal opposition to big-brand burger joints. On 3rd March, a larger-than-life image of Z’s Cheeseburger Pie appeared on a mobile billboard trailer, driven through each town for three hours before being parked in a prominent location. The teaser line: “Coming Soon to…”, no brand, just a mouth-watering image and a vague threat of change. As expected, local Facebook groups lit up. Marlborough Cool Cats Chat and Whiti Chit-Chat filled with speculation, debate, and outrage, exactly as planned. On 10th March, the twiset was revealed: it wasn’t a fast-food giant, but Z Energy, here to deliver something even more unexpected, a cheeseburger in pie form. Billboard creative was switched out to reveal the full campaign message, and locals once again took to Facebook to react, this time with a mix of relief, laughter, and a touch of disbelief. A tongue-in-cheek campaign that combined Out of Home theatre, social listening, and hyper-local insight to launch a flavour with real bite.

UNIVERSAL PICTURES - A MINECRAFT MOVIE

Aotearoa: Minecraft has a serious following, so when we installed our stunning 30m mural on Khyber Pass outside the railway station, St Peters High School and Les Mills, it was no surprise that the massive 2D cut outs were pilfered several times before we changed tack and production methods.  Clearly the creative evoked strong emotion with its strong visual appeal and cult following.

BLIND LOW VISION NZ

Aotearoa: Blind Low Vision NZ has launched Doggy Doonations, a clever fundraising initiative selling boxes of dog poop bags to help fund the training of guide dogs for New Zealanders who are blind, deafblind, or vision-impaired. The campaign takes a fresh, product-led approach that offers practical value to dog owners while supporting a vital cause. By tapping into a highly engaged audience of animal lovers, the campaign stands out with its relevance, humour, and optimism in a crowded and often emotionally heavy charitable space.
